Ninety days: what to build, and what to ignore

A one-page plan for anybody starting out or starting again. Three finished things, one of them for a real person with a real problem.

For anybody starting out, or starting again, here is a ninety-day plan that fits on one page.

Ignore

A follower count. It is a number that correlates with almost nothing you want.

A personal brand before you have a body of work to brand. The order matters and most people invert it. A brand built on nothing is visible to everyone as a brand built on nothing.

Certificates that certify attendance. A reader cannot tell a hard course from an easy one, so they discount all of them equally. That is not unfair, it is just information economics.

A fifth tool when you cannot yet produce anything finished with the first. Tool collection feels like progress because it generates a steady stream of small completions. It is the most comfortable way to spend ninety days and end them with nothing.

Advice from people whose only visible output is advice. Including, where it applies, this.

Build

Three finished things.

Finished is the operative word. A small complete piece beats an ambitious unfinished one every time, because completion is itself the rare signal. Anybody can start. The distribution of people who ship is much narrower than the distribution of people who begin, and your reader knows it.

One of the three should be for a real person with a real problem. Unpaid is fine. Small is fine. What is not fine is simulating it, because the simulation leaves out the only part that matters — somebody else's actual constraint, arriving at an inconvenient moment, forcing a decision you would not have made on your own.

It also gives you the only sentence that carries weight in an interview: here is what happened when somebody actually used it.

Why ninety days

Because it is enough for three small finished things and is not enough for a portfolio of grand ones.

Attempting the second is how most people end ninety days with nothing but a long explanation. The explanation is usually accurate. It is also indistinguishable, from the outside, from having done no work at all.

Where to start

Pick the first of the three. Make it smaller than feels respectable. Finish it.
